Household Hazardous Waste - SOCRRA to Provide Special Household Waste Disposal to Hills Residents - Replacing Hazardous Waste Days

printer-friendly Complete List of Acceptable and Unacceptable Household Hazardous Waste

We are pleased to announce that residents will soon be able to dispose of household hazardous waste products and discarded electronic devices at the Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority (SOCCRA) disposal facility at 991 Coolidge Highway in Troy. As of July 1, 2011, residents may make an “appointment” to use the facility which is open from 9:00am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Appointments to dispose of household materials requiring special handling, processing and disposal, may be made by calling SOCRRA at (248) 288-5153. Once an appointment has been scheduled, residents may dispose of any combination of household hazardous waste up to ten gallons and/or used electronic equipment up to 80 pounds.

There will be no direct charge to you for this service for up to two appointments in a calendar year The City of Bloomfield Hills will be assessed for the disposal costs, replacing the annual hazardous waste collection day traditionally held in mid-September. A complete list of typical “special household wastes” as well as a listing of unacceptable special waste is available by clicking here.

SOCCRA accepts computer monitors, CPU’s, printers, TV’s, radios, telephones, cell phones, copy machines, fax machines, stereos, DVD, VDR and CD players. SOCRRA will also dispose of old medicines. Don’t take the chance of contaminating the ground water or drinking water by flushing them down the toilet. Instead, empty your unused or expired medicine into an unmarked plastic bag and take them with you to your appointment. Narcotics are not accepted.

Recyclable household waste may be disposed of without an appointment. A list of accepted recyclable household waste materials is on the SOCCRA website, www.socrra.org.

REMEMBER! SOCCRA ACCEPTS MATERIAL FROM HOMES, NOT BUSINESSES. Businesses may call Environmental Recycling Group, 13040 Merriman, Suite 200, Livonia, Mi 48150. Call (734) 437-9650 to make arrangements.
