Pistol Purchase Inspection

Pistol/Revolver Purchase Permits and Pistol/Revolver Inspections are provided to the residents of the City of Bloomfield Hills.

To obtain a Purchase Permit an appointment must be made with the Chief or his designated representative by calling (248) 644-4200. The process will take approximately 20 minutes for the 15 question written test and background check.  Upon passing the written test with 70% or higher and a clear background check you will be issued a Purchase Permit valid for 10 days.

Pistol registration can now be completed by physically presenting a pistol to the Bloomfield Hills Public Safety Department for Safety Inspection or by mailing to the Bloomfield Hills Public Safety Department, 45 East Long Lake Rd., Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, 48304 the two parts of the registration (MSP and local agency copies) and copy of (License to Purchase or Pistol Sales Record).  Registration is still required and should occur within 10 calendar days of the purchase.

The purchaser and seller must complete and sign all four parts.  Print neatly and clearly, in blue or black ink, with all the correct information.  Remember, if your writing is not legible, the pistol registration cannot be completed.  Purchaser must maintain a copy of the form on their person for 30 days while in possession of the pistol.  Violation of any of the pistol laws is still a crime.  Penalties may include jail, fines, loss of your rights to possess and purchase firearms, and forfeiture of your pistol.

Remember, the license to purchase (RI-10 obtained from the Bloomfield Hills Police Department) must be used anytime a pistol is transferred from one person to another.  Exception:  If the purchaser holds a valid Concealed Weapons permit and utilizes the RI-60 Pistol Sales Record.

Special procedures exist for a resident who has come into possession of a pistol/revolver through inheritance or purchased outside of Michigan and they want to have them inspected.  Contact the Chief (248) 644-4200 for the current process required by the State.

CCW, Carry Concealed Weapons Permits, are obtainable through Oakland County Sheriffs Department Gun Registration Bureau (248) 858-5015
