The City of Bloomfield Hills has been incorporated since 1932. Prior to becoming a city, Bloomfield Hills mostly consisted of farms and fruit orchards. It was first settled in the 19th century. Early settlers were attracted to the city due to its fertile land and proximity to the city of Detroit.
Detroit’s industrial growth in the 19th Century brought wealth to many business leaders. These leaders sought refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city in Bloomfield Hills. They began purchasing large plots of land to build a summer and weekend home, and enjoyed practicing a bit of farming. Eventually, large homes began to line Woodward Avenue and other main roads in the city. In the early 20th century, Bloomfield Hills became a place for these wealthy residents to settle permanently.
Industrialists, including those associated with the automotive industry, built extensive estates. The landscape, characterized by rolling hills and dense woodlands, provided an ideal setting for luxurious homes.
One of the most influential figures in shaping the area was George Gough Booth. George was a newspaper magnate who developed Cranbrook Educational Community in the 1920s. Cranbrook was designed by renowned architect Eliel Saarinen. Completed in 1927, it was Saarinen’s first accomplished work in the United States. Booth chose the name “Cranbrook” in honor of his father, who was born in Cranbrook, England. It became a cornerstone of Bloomfield Hills, featuring world-class schools, an art museum, and a science institute. The campus remains one of the defining features of the city.
